LIFE’S UNEXPECTED PATHS : A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND LEADERSHIP (PART 2)
UNEXPECTED BLESSINGS AND DIVINE JUSTICE
In 2008, I learned that Principals of schools with Sixth Form classes would soon be promoted to a higher grade (DG52). Since I was not serving in such a school, I knew I would miss the opportunity. I felt disheartened, especially because seniority was not considered in this promotion process. I still remember an officer from the State Education Office responding to me with, “Nasib cikgulah.” I felt dismissed — how could such an important matter be reduced to the word nasib? Still, I accepted the reality, because there was no point questioning a policy that had already been set.
About half a year later, I unexpectedly received my promotion letter to Grade DG52 and was transferred to a school with a Sixth Form. What surprised me even more was that the principals who were already serving in Sixth Form schools did not receive the DG52 promotion as previously claimed. Being promoted ahead of them even created some tension, as many had expected to be the first in line for the grade.
What an irony! I suppose the words “Nasib cikgulah” had transformed into “Nasib cikgu baik.” 😊 People may create policies, but ultimately, it is God who determines the outcome.
THE PATH I NEVER PLANNED, BUT WAS MEANT TO WALK
In mid 2010, I applied to transfer to another school after learning that the principal there would soon be retiring. I had never the slightest idea what the school would become under my leadership, nor how long I would eventually serve there. My intention was simple: after being blessed with two well-performing schools previously, I wanted a new environment that could offer fresh insight—one that would challenge me and allow me to contribute in meaningful ways.
Although a few close acquaintances discouraged me from taking up this challenge, I remained determined and prepared to face whatever obstacles awaited. Looking back now, after serving nearly ten years in what would become my final school, I am honoured to say that I made the right decision. This was the school that stretched my leadership to its greatest height, shaped me into a wiser and more humble leader and gave me some of the most significant achievements of my career.
When I recall the moment I accepted the transfer, I could never have imagined what lay ahead. All I wanted was to lead the school toward its highest potential. Truthfully, I walked in without knowing what challenges or opportunities awaited me. Yet, in hindsight, I believe God “motivated” me to take on this responsibility, and the time I was given there was exactly what a leader needs to bring about meaningful, positive change.
LESSONS FROM LIFE’S UNEXPECTED TURNS
Life often takes unexpected turns and what seems like a setback today may be a hidden opportunity for tomorrow. Trust the journey, even when the path feels uncertain or obstacles appear insurmountable. Rejections or disappointments are not always the end — they can be stepping stones guiding you toward better opportunities you may not yet see.
Challenges and difficulties, though uncomfortable, are powerful teachers. Embrace them with patience and perseverance, for they often prepare you for greater responsibilities and personal growth. Sometimes, the lessons learned in adversity become the foundation for long-term success and fulfillment.
Remain open to unexpected opportunities and have faith in the process. What may initially seem inconvenient, intimidating or undesired could turn out to be exactly what you need. By staying diligent, keeping your integrity and trusting God’s guidance, you equip yourself to navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence and gratitude.
REFLECTION
Looking back on the journey of my life and career, I cannot help but see how every twist, disappointment and unexpected turn was quietly shaping the path I was meant to walk. What once felt like mere coincidences — or even misfortunes, now appear as purposeful steps arranged by God with a wisdom far greater than my own.
Sometimes a missed opportunity that led to a setback, eventually turns into something brighter. Going into teaching profession was a calling that became not just a career, but a passion that defined my entire life’s work. What seemed like a closed door was, in truth, a deeper blessing waiting to unfold.
Even the small, seemingly playful moments—like a friend reading my palm could turned out to be strangely prophetic. Though I did not leave the country, God still led me across the sea, where I began and eventually concluded my meaningful career. The journey that once felt improbable became a reality I embraced wholeheartedly.
Throughout my leadership journey, God’s intervention appeared again and again — sometimes subtly, sometimes unmistakably. Each challenge was a reminder that I was never alone - guidance and strength always came at the right time.
Career moves that many found difficult came to me with unexpected ease. Three transfers, all approved without obstacles — how could such favour be explained if not by divine grace? Even when I faced assignments that seemed unfair or policies that appeared to sideline me, God turned circumstances around in ways I could never have predicted. God’s timing and purpose always prevail.
Through every season — uncertainty, promotion, challenge and change — God’s hand was quietly guiding, protecting and opening doors I never imagined. My journey reminds me that we do not always understand the events that unfold before us, but in time, we begin to see how each moment fits beautifully into the story written for us.
I walk away from my career with deep gratitude. Every blessing, every trial and every unexpected turn shaped me into who I am today. And above all, I have learned this : people may plan, policies may dictate and circumstances may shift, but ultimately, God determines the path — and His plan is always perfect.
